The first in a series of posts about where you money goes when it’s donated to Gift for Life, and is then handed off to DIFFA, today’s piece focuses on a terrific New York program that truly makes a difference.

DIFFA (Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS) helps fund scholarships for low-income, HIV-positive students enrolled in The Alpha Workshops programs. The Alpha Workshops is the only not-for-profit organization in the country that trains and employs people living with HIV/AIDS in the decorative arts, making the partnership a natural fit for both groups.

An industry pioneer since its founding in 1995, Alpha Workshops has developed a unique training curriculum and created a flexible, supportive workplace that is responsive to the medical, financial and emotional needs of people living with a chronic illness. They operate a highly regarded design studio, staffed completely by trainees and graduates, and is well-known for its handcrafted wallpapers, on-site custom painting, decorative finishes, gilding and hand-cast lamps.

New year, new Chair…. Gift for Life is pleased to announce the appointment of Leslie Nathan-Street to the helf of the Gfit for Life Board of Directors. In this two-year-term position, she’ll be responsible for leading GFL’s Board, which currently consists of 27 volunteer members from the gift, home and stationery industries, including manufacturers, reps, trade-show and market-center management, media and consultants.

Nathan-Street is a longtime gift and home industry veteran. She previously served as President of the Gift and Home Channel, the first internet television channel for independent retailers; and prior to that was Sr. V.P. at George Little Management, LLC.

Leslie replaces the highly respected and deeply appreciated Jenny Hammons, owner of Jenny Hammons/Company, who served as GFL’s chair from 2009-2010. We look back with enormous thanks for all she did at the helm, and look forward to what Leslie will bring to the role.

Here’s to a wonderful 2011 ahead, for everyone!

All the drab gray skies, swirling snow, and frozen toes have a few folks feeling a bit of cabin fever…so…what do you say we all head to a party? Not just any party. The GFL Party for Life, which is gonna set your socks on fire.

Held at the stunning Boat House in Central Park, this party-like-none-before-it kicks off with your own Big Appletini upon arrival, setting the tone…New York style. Our emcee, Tom Sullivan, will guide us through a night of entertainment and frivolity, including a wild romp with “Arlene’s World Famous Live Rock and Roll Karaoke Band.”

(That alone will be worth serious buzz at the water cooler, come Monday morning).

We’ve amped up auction items too. Among the array of treats and treasures are tickets to a Janet Jackson concert (complete with backstage passes!); a David Letterman package (including tickets to his show); a private residence stay in the Turks and Caicos; and a plethora of jewelry, home decor, personal accessories, and travel items rounding out the selection.

Most important, we’re honoring three standout folks who deserve a moment in the sun:

Kathy Ireland, our first Design for Life Award winner
Marsha Miller, our first Trailblazer Award winner
David Moses, recipient of the highly regarded Bert Tonkin Gift of Giving Award

It’s going to be one heck of a night…and a topic of conversation at the Javitz the next day. C’mon. If you haven’t yet, get your tickets. Time’s a-wasting; get out there and have a little fun.

Party for Life received a big sponsorship boost from The Mainstreet Collection, Inc. “Big” as in “never been done before.” So big that, well…we had to come up with a new designation for it.

The gift product company has generously designated a $25,000 legal settlement (listing Kirkland’s Inc. on behalf of The Mainstreet Collection, Inc.) to support Gift for Life, in addition to the $5,000 they’d already donated for their Gold level sponsorship, for a grand total of $30,000.
