For a number of years I was aware of Gift for Life and impressed with the dedication and goals of the GFL Board.  Additionally, I was aware of so many talented people in the gift, home and design industries who were no longer with us.  What a loss of creative genius and loss of  wonderful human beings.

I was thrilled when I was invited to be a member of the GFL Board of Directors eight years ago.  Since then I have learned so much about the insidious breadth of AIDS.  In the beginning it was thought to infect one singular group, but we all now know AIDS/HIV has no bounds.  In early years of AIDS many children with hemophilia were innocently infected by blood transfusions.  No one singular group, race, or resident of any single continent is free from the potential of infection.

The medical industry has learned much and thankfully made many advances and with the help of generous donations research has allowed infected people to live “normal” lives.  But there is so much more to be done.  We can’t give up.

Having been in the Gift and Home industry for over 20 years, I was devastatingly exposed to the loss of friends and work associates to HIV/AIDS and I wanted to find a way to be a part of the solution.

In 2002, after working at the LA Mart for about 2 years, we decided to have a fund raising event party to benefit Gift For Life.  As Marketing Director, the planning and execution for the event was primarily my responsibility. It was a huge effort for the team here at the LA Mart but fortunately it gave me the opportunity to meet Sheila Charton who was working for AMfar, the charity that GFL sponsored.  The event was a huge success and continued to be one of the largest GFL fundraisers on the West Coast for years to come.

I stayed in close touch with Sheila and when a board seat became available, Sheila recommended me and I happily became a GFL board Member.   The good work that GFL does is so important.  As medical advances progress, this disease tends to be  thought of as long-term or chronic instead of terminal, so naturally the public is not as aware as it once was to its ongoing devastation.  HIV and it’s rate of new infection is still a huge issue and I am proud to be a part of this wonderful group that works so hard to keep the Gift and Home community aware and educated in HIV and HIV related issues.
